Chinese Astrology is really
Chinese Calendarism. It is based upon an old feudal agricultural
calendar that was used in ancient China. The first printed version of
this study dates back to an almanac from the eighth century which was
printed from wooden blocks. The origins of Chinese astrology are so
old as to be lost in antiquity.

Also known as
the Spring Festival, the Chinese New Year is a time of
excitement and joy. Because the Chinese calendar is based on
the cycles of the moon, the beginning of the new year can
fall anywhere between late January and the middle of
February. In 2002, it comes on February 12th. The
festivities begin 22 days prior to the New Year date and
continue for 15 days afterward.
2003 is the
Year of the Sheep or Goat.

Happy Chinese New Year! Also known as the Spring
Festival, the Chinese New Year is a time of excitement and
joy. Because the Chinese calendar is based on the cycles of
the Moon, the beginning of the New Year can fall anywhere
between late January and the middle of February. In 2003,
it comes on February 1st. The festivities begin 22 days
prior to the New Year date and continue for 15 days
afterward.
This year we celebrate the Year of the Sheep or Goat.
With this gentle Sign guiding most of our 2003, we can
expect a time of harmony, tranquility and understanding. The
Goat encourages us to be more easygoing and relaxed; for the
next year, we'll pledge to live our lives in a quiet,
peaceful manner. We'll move slower than usual, taking time
to smell the proverbial roses, but we'll also feel less
stressed about petty or minor details. We'll spend more time
with family and friends, and our kind, compassionate
demeanor ensures that we'll make pleasant new connections as
well.
Because the Goat is so artistic, we'll spend much of the
year pursuing creative endeavors. We'll also indulge our
many whims and fantasies -- as long as we get our most
important tasks done, we shouldn't feel guilty about
catering to our whimsical side. Our imaginations will be
given free rein, so we'll be able to come up with innovative
plans and solutions. Although we may seem disorganized or
scatterbrained at times, we'll actually have everything in
order -- it just may take others awhile to see the method to
our madness!
Although we'll need some space to dream, reflect and
create in 2003, we're sure to take advantage of our
boundless artistic talents and find the serenity and peace
that we seek.

Year 2003 is a Chinese Black Sheep (Black Goat,
Black Ram) Year. Why do the Chinese name year 2003 as the Black
Sheep Year? Chinese calendar uses the
Stem-Branch system to count the days, months and years. There
are 10 Stems and 12 Branches in this system. Stems are named by the
Yin-Yang and Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth). The
Stem sequence order is
Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin
Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water and
Yin Water. Branches use the animal names. |
The Branch sequence order is
Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey,
Chicken, Dog and Pig. Stem and Branch are used together to form a cycle
of 60 counting systems which begin from
   Wooden
Rat and end with
 Water
Pig. You can see the entire sequence from the
Chinese New
Year's page. From Year 1924 to Year 1983 is a complete cycle. Year
2003 is Female Water Sheep, the 20th of the Stem-Branch in the system.
Because Water is equivalent to color Black in the
Five-Element
system, Year 2003 is also called Black Sheep year. Snake (2001),
Horse (2002) and Sheep (2003) are the cycle of Fire years. The Sheep is
the ending year of the cycle. Sheep contains Fire, Earth and Wood
elements. Therefore, the year of Sheep will carry the old business from
the Horse year, then face the new business from the Earth element. In
the end period of Sheep year is the precursor of next Metal cycle. That
means 2003 is a turning point year for many people.
